A Little About Dr. Seuss
His real name was Theodore Seuss Geisel. He was born
March 2nd, 1904. This is the story that was conveyed to me by my
Children's Literacy professor during my undergraduate years.
When Theodore S. Geisel went to university to get his
Ph.D. in English Literature, he passed all of his courses, but was not
granted a Ph.D. because he did not pass his final orals where he had to
defend his thesis before a board.
So, Mr. Geisel bestowed upon himself the honorary title
and nom de plum: Dr. Seuss (using his middle name).
Personally, I think that it is a wonderful example of how
one can defy the odds and become whatever one wants to become, despite the
opinions of others. In my opinion, he is a doctor--a doctor of some
of the most rich and delightful children's literature ever written. |
