| Mothers' Day
Mother's Day is the 2nd Sunday in May. Origin of American Mother's Day: Probably, mid May was chosen, because most women who become mothers, become mothers in Spring. Julia Ward Howe, Juliet Calhoun Blakeley and Anna Jarvis share the honors for the present day commemoration of Mother's Day. There were several organizations and movements to honor mothers in the U.S.A. starting in 1868. The movement grew in the 1870s - 1880s. By the early 1900's, the U.S. government came on board with the movement. On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and requesting a proclamation. The next day, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the first national Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, 1914. American Mother's Day Traditions: Traditions include giving flowers to one's mother, cooking all the meals if still living with one's mother; and/or taking her out for dinner (if not still living with mother). Giving Mothers' Day cards is very common, as well. Some people make their own cards, and write sentimental things. Of course, card-making companies have jumped "onboard" and have made a plethora of cards honoring mothers.
